On April 09, 15h, aula 00.13, MTM, Prof. Mickaël Courtois will give a talk entitled "Multiphysics modelling of welding and additive manufacturing processes, and measurement of liquid metal thermophysical properties by aerodynamic levitation."
SEMINAR: "Multiphysics modelling of welding and additive manufacturing processes, and measurement of liquid metal thermophysical properties by aerodynamic levitation."
ONLINE
15:00 - 16:00
This presentation will summarize, with an accessible approach, research activities carried out at IRDL CNRS laboratory on liquid metals.
The first research axis discussed concerns the development of multiphysics models in order to describe the melting process of metals in a finite element code. These models are focused on electromagnetic, hydrodynamic and heat transfer study with often a free surface description in a fully coupled approach. This activity will be presented through examples of representative studies in the field of welding (laser and arc), metal additive manufacturing (arc-WAAM) and cutting (laser).
A second research axis will be developed on characterization of liquid metals at high temperature (1500°C – 3000°C). This activity will be presented through the experimental developments carried out in the laboratory with the new platform for characterization of liquid metals including aerodynamic levitation. This device allows the measurement of numerous thermophysical properties such as surface tension, viscosity or density at temperatures up to 3000 °C, without contact and in a controlled atmosphere.
We will finally see how these two research axes (numerical and experimental) complement and feed each other rather well.
